Beyond John Wick: Finding Real Male Role Models in Today's World

Generational Gender Bias Tells Men to 'Man Up'.

It's Time to Rewrite the Script. In a world where the phrase "man up" is often used to silence emotions and vulnerabilities, generational gender bias continues to shape the way men perceive strength and masculinity.

This bias, deeply rooted in societal expectations passed down from generation to generation, dictates how men should act, feel, and express themselves. It's a narrative woven into our society's fabric, influencing everything from personal relationships to workplace dynamics.

What is Generational Gender Bias?

Generational gender bias refers to the ingrained stereotypes and expectations placed on individuals based on their gender, perpetuated across generations.

For men, this often means adhering to the traditional ideals of being stoic, unemotional, and unwaveringly strong. The expectation to "man up" is a prime example of how these biases manifest, urging men to suppress their feelings and avoid showing vulnerability.

The Persistence of an Outdated Script

Despite the vast information and diverse viewpoints available at their fingertips, young men today still face the pressure of generational gender bias.

The internet provides access to countless resources and communities that promote emotional well-being and mental health awareness. However, the longstanding societal script urging men to conform to outdated norms remains a formidable barrier.

In many cultures, expressions of emotion in men are often met with ridicule or dismissed as weakness. This pressure to conform can lead to severe mental health challenges, including anxiety and depression, as men struggle to live up to unrealistic standards.

How Media Exacerbates Gender Bias

The media plays a significant role in perpetuating generational gender bias. Television programs often lack honest and decent male role models, presenting unrealistic expectations through characters like John Wick or Marvel superheroes.

Men are frequently cast as villains or relegated to the friend zone if they show kindness, reinforcing harmful stereotypes.

Social media further compounds this issue, with influencers often showcasing wealth, unhealthy relationships with mental health, and a disregard for women.

These portrayals create a skewed perception of masculinity, leading young men to aspire to unattainable ideals.

Algorithms exacerbate the problem by inundating feeds with sexualised images, violence, and unrealistic masculine themes, encouraging doom scrolling and further distorting perceptions of masculinity.

The Role of Positive Male Role Models

To combat the effects of generational gender bias, positive male role models are essential. These are men who embody a more holistic definition of strength—one that includes vulnerability, empathy, and openness. By stepping up and sharing their experiences, these role models can inspire other men to break free from the confines of traditional masculinity.

The analogy that "it takes a village of men to raise our young men" underscores the importance of community in reshaping these narratives. In addition to raising young men, this communal effort is crucial in setting an example for all men to embody masculinity and lead by example. Role models demonstrating healthy masculinity and leadership can significantly impact men's perceptions of themselves and societal roles. By exhibiting qualities such as emotional intelligence, empathy, and responsible leadership, they provide a blueprint for others to follow.

Redefining Strength and Supporting Men's Mental Health

It's time to rewrite the script and redefine what it means to be strong. Strength should not be measured by the ability to endure silently but by the courage to seek help and support others in doing the same. We can promote healthier relationships and communities by fostering environments where men feel safe to express vulnerability and emotions.

The call to action is clear: we must challenge the outdated narratives and champion new definitions of masculinity that emphasise authenticity and emotional expression. Together, we can create a society where men's mental health is prioritised and strength is celebrated in all its forms.

Let us work collectively to #RedefineStrength and support initiatives like Tough To Talk, which lead the charge in this vital conversation.
